2008 Fishing Reports

Reports (With Clients 2008)

Today I fished with good friend and guide assistant Chris Clark. We had a pretty good day using jigs and crankbaits in depths of 4-8ft of water. Most of our fish came in water that had good clarity and a little current. Our best five weigh around 12lbs, with a 4.2lb big fish!Today I fished with Jonathan and Laura O’Neal from Murfreesboro, TN. I met the O’ Neals at Fate Sanders Marina at 7am. We launched from the warm resturant into the blistering cold wind with high hopes of a great day of fishing. We started the day fishing deep for crappie with live bait. After a couple hours and a few keepers, I decided to change things a little by tieing on jiggin spoons and looking for diving seagals. As we began to get into the river we found flocks of birds directing us to the fish. We pulled right on top of them and lowered our spoons. The next several hours we caught over 30 white bass, hybrids and bass. Thanks for a great trip guys. I will see you in the spring!Today I fished with father and son, both named Jim Wagner from Franklin, TN and Texas. Fishing for bass, we had a fair day with around a dozen fish in the boat. We never found the size of fish that we were hoping for, but nevertheless we had a blast catching 1-2lb fish. Most of our fish were caught on 8ft-12ft crankbaits in the mouths of creeks. Thanks for a great trip guys. See you in the spring!Yesterday I fished Jack Lewis from Pearlington, MS and good friends Phil and Connie Hast from Brentwood. We met at Fate Sanders Marina at 12noon and fished until 4pm. In those four hours we landed 19 keepers! We also caught many little fish and a few catfish. Thanks for a great trip guys!Yesterday I fished with crappie man Jerry Haglage. Fishing for what else, crappie, Jerry and I had a pretty good day. In about 6 hrs of fishing we caught over 30 crappie with 15 keepers. The fish seemed to be kind of skittish, we would catch one or two crappie at each tree and then they would shut off. We would go to another tree and catch one or two more and then they would shut off again. Nevertheless, another great day of fishing with some of the most beautiful weather of the year! See ya next time Jerry!Today I fished with John Seale from Brentwood, TN. John and I go out about once a month, and have been able to build a fun relationship throughout our trips. Our last few trips have been kinda slow, so I was eager to have a good trip. With the Sunday morning tournament out of Flippers Bait and Tackle over, the lake seemed empty……and what do you know, the fish were biting. Fishing from 7am-12noon, we caught over 20 bass with our best five keepers around 11lbs! All fish were caught on crankbaits, swimbaits, and topwater (John missed a big one in the morning)! Thanks for another great trip John, I’ll see you in a few weeks!Saturday I fished with father and son, Bob and Brad Wiltz. Fishing for whatever would bite, we went out with a handful of jiggin spoons. The first few hours we caught a bunch of yellow bass at a few different locations. It wasn’t until our last spot where we really began loading the boat. Fishing a ledge up lake, we caught tons of yellows, along with half a dozen big white bass, a few largemouths, cappie, one nice catfish, and one giant fish that unbuttoned from Brad’s lure while fighting him to the boat. We are not sure what it was, but it was BIG! Thanks for another great trip guys, see you in the spring! Thursday I fished with Will and Eddie from Nashville. Fishing for bass, we had a pretty good day. In the morning we were able to catch a few on topwater and crankbaits. The afternoon was slow with a few bites here and there. After, lunch we went back out and had a great rest of the day. Will caught 6 bass in about 45 minutes, along with a bunch of big white bass! Thanks for a great trip guys!Today I fished with Michael and Scott from CA. This was Mike’s third time out with me, and the last two trips went well. I have to admit that this was one trip that I was a little discouraged because of the freezing temps and the 20mph wind. When the guys told me that they wanted to catch some bass I thought, “oh Lord please help me find some fish”…..hahaha. I had a few areas that were holding bass last week, but I knew there was a high chance they would have moved because of the cold temperatures. As we pulled up to the cove to fish, I saw a few splashes on the surface and thought “thank you Lord”! We started casting crankbaits and the fish started coming in the boat. Now, we did have to take a lot of cast, but for the day we caught around 12 bass (with two nice keepers) and 20 white bass! Thanks for another great time guys, see you in the spring!Today I fished with Michael and Ray Powers from Buffalo. Fishing for crappie we had a great day catching over 25 fish with a few giants (including this beauty Ray is holding up in the right picture)! We probably caught around 8 keepers and many short fish. We also caught a bunch of yellow and white bass, and half a dozen large, spotted and smallmouth bass! Thanks for a great trip guys!Yesterday I fished with Wayne Stiff from Sping Hill, TN. Wayne was wanting help finding, and catching crappie so he could go out with his sons and be successful. I took him to a few places that are easy to find and we began fishing. In the four hours we were out, we caught over 20 fish with 7 keepers! Thanks for a great trip Wayne.Yesterday I fished with Greg Tidwell and James Smith. Fishing for crappie we had a great day, catching over 50 fish, including 18 keepers! The crappie are still deep, but should come up in the next week or two if the cool temperatures stay. Thanks for a great trip guys!Today I fished with Brian Fernandez from Franklin, TN with brother in law Lambert Dias from India. We started the morning fishing for bass,in the shallows. We caught around 6 in the first hour, including this nice largemouth over 3lb and then the bite slowed down. A couple hours later we switched over to crappie and began slinging them into the boat. For the second part of the day we caught over 25 crappie with 14 keepers! Thanks for a great time guys, see you in the fall Brian!Yesterday I had two trips. My first trip was with Jerry Haglage. In the 4 hours that we fished, we and had another 13 keepers. Thanks for a great time guys!Today I fished with Ron and Scott Probasco from Nashville. Fishing for crappie, we also had a great morning with 14 keepers in 4hrs. We did manage to catch a few fish shallow, but most of them came in 13-19ft. Half of the fish were caught in 8-9ft of water and the rest were caught in 13ft- 7ft of water, on live bait. Thanks for a great trip Robert, I had a blast!Today I fished with Jeff and Ben Doster. Fishing for bass, we had a good day one the lake with half a dozen fish. We started in the steam plant where Ben caught this beautiful white bass, and dad caught his biggest largemouth. We had many bites throughout the day, boating most of them. Ben you did a great job fighting your fish and learning the learn tactics I showed you……keep up the good work!Yesterday I fished with Jim and Beverly Small from Nashville. Fishing for crappie, we had a exciting day with bites everywhere we went. We fished in 4-8ft of water for most of the trip and then jumped to a deeper location where Jim caught a crappie I will never forget. Altogether we caught 15 crappie with around a dozen keepers, but the highlight of the trip was when Jim caught this 14.5″ crappie that weighed in at 2.3lbs! What a crappie, I have caught many just under 2lbs but never one over. Congratulations Jim!!!!!Tuesday I fished with John, Jason and Tyler Allen from Murfreesboro and Colorado. Fishing for crappie the first half of the day, we found little activity in 14-18ft. After fishing deep trees with little success, we switch over to shallow trees in 8ft and started catching fish. The crappie are on the move into the their fall patter and the next 6-8 weeks should be good fishing!. After crappie fishing for a while we thought we would try our luck with bass. At 5am we contacted each other and decided to set sail and give it our best try with the high winds. I have to admit it was the windiest I have ever fished in, but we were still able to get many bites. We tried our best to fish in areas that were protected, but no matter where you fished you could not completely escape the wind. For the four hours we fished, we caught around 15 – 20 crappie and mixed bags of everything else in the lake. We had half a dozen keepers with many small crappie. Thanks for a great time Jerry, I will see you in the spring!Saturday I fished with Greg and Amy Vinet. Greg is from Maryland, visiting his daughter that goes to Vanderbelt. Thanks guys, see you next week! After fishing Flippers tournament (only had one keeper and a few shorts…tough…frustrating after the last few mornings we had) with client John Seale, I had another trip with father and son Jeff and Larry Harrow. I look forward to our next trip later in the year!Yesterday I fished with Al and Turner Strayhorn. Al lives here in Middle TN and Turner is visiting from NC. We started the morning fishing for bass, our lure of choice was topwater. Within the first 5 minutes Al caught this nice beauty on a popper! The next hour we caught 5 more, some of them came off drops with worms. Then we switched over to crappie and start swinging them over the railing. At our first tree, you could drop your line down and count to 10 and you would have a crappie on your line. We caught around 20 or so there and then started bouncing around from tree to tree. We did not get as many bites at the other trees but most of the fish were 13′ – 15″! This year I have caught more fish in that length range than any year pervious. Happy Birthday Drew!Today I fished with John Creviston, from Banning, CA. Today was one of the toughest days I have had in the last month. The wind was very fierce, limiting a lot of areas I like to fish, and the bass were not aggressive as they have been. Although the lake is flooded into the shoreline, the shallow bite was quiet, and if you moved out into deeper water, it was too rough. For the day we had 12 fish, 8 in the boat. All fish were caught on worms, jigs and crankbaits. Thanks for a great time John, see you next year!Today I fished with one of my most frequent clients and good friend, Jerry Haglage. Like always, our hunt for the day was crappie. We knew the wind was going to try to blow us off the lake, but we accepted the challenge and headed for some great spots. Our location options were rather limited, but we managed to stay out of the wind for most of the day. Fishing with minnows, we caught over 30 crappie with 15 keepers (including 5 that were 13″ and 2 in that were 14″+ range). Thanks for another great trip, Jerry! With the high winds, worms, jigs did the trick. We also caught a few on topwater when we fished calm pockets. Thanks for another wonderful time guys, I look forward to our next trip in June!Today I fished with Travis, Corey and Craig from middle TN. Fishing for bass from noon – 4:30pm, we caught 15 with a few good keepers. All fish were caught on jigs, worms and topwater. This is a really fun time of the year to fish, tons of fish are up shallow and every few little fish you get a good one! Thanks for a great time guys!Today I fished with Bruce and Shelia Boyd, from Murfreesboro. Today was Bruce’s birthday, so he decided what better way to spend his day fishing with is wife, away from work, enjoying God’s creations. Fishing for crappie, we had a slow first few hours, a few here and there. With most of the crappie out of the shallows and the water temperature still were into the 80’s (were we need it to be), the deep pattern I like to fish all summer has not yet kicked in. The fish are in transition, and it is difficult to find active fish. After we fished for crappie for a while we trolled with crankbaits for anything, finding a few nice bass. For the last hour of the day we tried a few shallow trees with minnows and caught 3-4 keepers. Thanks for a great trip guys, Happy Birthday Bruce! All last week I brim, and cat fished with Harry Michaels from PA. On Thursday we had a few nice catfish fishing the Gallatin steam plant. We also caught a bunch of big bluegills on minnows as well, perfect eating size. Thanks for a fun week Harry, I will see you next year!Today I fished with Harry Michaels, from PA. Fishing for bass, we caught 20 fish in deep, and shallow water on worms, jigs, and spinnerbaits. Thanks for a great time Harry, look forward to our next trip!Today I had two trips! My first trip was at Old Hickory with John Seale. I have been teaching John, bass techniques for two years now, and he is becoming quite the angler. Fishing in 3-6ft with soft plastic, John and I boated 17 bass! Thanks for another great trip John, I look forward to our next trip in June….be prepared for deep fishing! My next trip was at Percy Priest with Gary and Tyler Thompson, from Franklin, TN. We started the afternoon trolling for crappie and hybrid. After our first hour we had a few fish, including a 3lb hybrid and a nice crappie. After trolling, we headed to some of my crappie spots and boated 4 more keepers and a handful of short ones. Thanks for a great trip guys. You did a great job Tyler!Yesterday I fished with Bob, Robby and Bill Good From Franklin, TN. This was there second time out this year. We started the day fishing for crappie, but after an hour, the bite was too slow and the wind was high, so we decided to head up lake where we have caught some fish trolling crankbaits. Once we arrived we caught a fish on our first pass, and then stayed there for 3 hours. We probably caught 15-20 hybrids, white bass, largemouths and one drum and crappie. Our best fish were the hybrids, we had half a dozen weighing in at 3lb and 5lbs. Thanks for a great time guys, you did an awesome job! Hope you hands feel better today:)Today I fished with 7 high school friends from Chicago. Fishing in three boats with guides, Billy Harris, Jimmy Scott and myself, we headed out for a fun competitive day. The fishing was good, in between banking the boats from the storm! We fished for 6 hours and caught around 40 bass between us. Multiple good keepers were caught and tons of fish between 1-2lbs. At the dock, it appeared that many lures worked. Most came on soft plastic and jigs but my boat caught a few on crankbaits and topwater. Thanks for a great trip guys! I hope you enjoy the rest of your stay in Nashville and come see us again. Thanks again, from the BCGS team!Today I had two trips. My first trip was with Gary Hamman (song writer for country music stars), Ron Harbin Sr. (country music writer) and son, Ron Harbin Jr (does production for television). With the HIGH winds, we had limited fishing areas, but we still managed to catch fish throughout the day. In the morning we started crappie fishing, catching a few here and there, but not many and not much size, halfway through the day we started trolling for crappie and got into a bunch of feeding fish….hybrids, bass and crappie. Guys, I had a great time with you and wish you the best of luck on Music Row!My second trip was with Nancy and Bob from Ohio. Fishing for bass we had a great evening, catching 21 bass with a few keepers. All fish were caught on soft plastic, jigs, crankbaits and topwater. Thanks for wonderful evening and safe travel home!
